Building composite indicators in tourism studies: Measurements and applications in tourism destination competitiveness
2017
Abstract Composite indicators are useful tools to synthesize and monitor multidimensional phenomena. The aim of this paper is twofold: to offer the methodological foundations to build composite indicators in tourism and to evaluate a set of currently available composite indicators. Tourism destination competitiveness indicators constitute the object of this contribution. Their definitions, concepts and measures are analyzed and their evaluation is performed through the application of an original protocol. The results highlight that several methodological issues still surround the measurement of destinations competitiveness indicators. This paper provides tourism scholars and practitioners w…
An X-ray characterization of the central region of the supernova remnant G332.5-5.6
2015
Aims. We present an X-ray analysis of the central region of supernova remnant (SNR) G332.5-5.6 through an exhaustive analysis of XMM-Netwon observations with complementary infrared observations. We characterize and discuss the origin of the observed X-ray morphology, which presents a peculiar plane edge over the west side of the central region. Methods. The morphology and spectral properties of the X-ray SNR were studied using a single full frame XMM-Netwon observation in the 0.3 to 10.0 keV energy band. Archival infrared WISE observations at 8, 12 and 24 μm were also used to investigate the properties of the source and its surroundings at different wavelengths. Results. The results show th…

Laboratory measurements and astronomical search for the HSO radical
2016
[Context] Despite the fact that many sulfur-bearing molecules, ranging from simple diatomic species up to astronomical complex molecules, have been detected in the interstellar medium, the sulfur chemistry in space is largely unknown and a depletion in the abundance of S-containing species has been observed in the cold, dense interstellar medium. The chemical form of the missing sulfur has yet to be identified.
Effect of Mg2+ ions on competitive metal ions adsorption/desorption on magnesium ferrite : mechanism, reusability and stability studies
2021
The adsorption behavior of magnesium ferrite in single- and multicomponent metal ions solutions in the presence of Mg2+ ions were studied. A dramatic decrease in the adsorption capacity of magnesium ferrite towards Mn2+, Co2+, and Ni2+ ions for comparison study of single- and multicomponent solutions was established. The affinity of the sorbent in accordance with the maximum sorption capacities increases in the following order Cu2+ > Co2+ > Ni2+ > Mn2+. High efficiency of magnesium ferrite regeneration (~100%) with aqueous solutions of magnesium chloride in the concentration range of 0.001-0.1 M was shown. The low degree of toxic metal ions desorption combined with XRD, IR spectroscopy, and…

Intercultural competence is a range of skills, which lead to constructive and appropriate communication with other cultures. Difficulty in communicating with different part of European society, immigrants included, may result not only from linguistic misunderstanding, but also from cultural differences. This fact led to introducing the profession of linguistic and/or cultural mediator. After Bologna Process the mediation courses were provided by European and Italian universities. In these courses students can learn about inter-linguistic and intercultural communication through the study of European and non-European languages. Students have to be taught not only in translation and interpreti…
The Administration of Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 Ameliorates Development of DSS-Induced Colitis in Mice
2018
The beneficial effects of probiotics on immune-based pathologies such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have been well reported. However, their exact mechanisms have not been fully elucidated. Few studies have focused on the impact of probiotics on the composition of the colonic microbiota. The aim of the present study was to correlate the intestinal anti-inflammatory activity of the probiotic Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN) in the dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) model of mouse colitis with the changes induced in colonic microbiota populations. EcN prevented the DSSinduced colonic damage, as evidenced by lower disease activity index (DAI) values and colonic weight/length ratio, when compa…
Economic conditions of islands and policies to rebalance territorial disparities
2022
The focus on island contexts stems from the fact that they present peculiarities related not only to the morphology of the territory but also to the economic and social system that characterises them. The territory of the European Union includes more than 3,000 islands in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans, the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, the Mediterranean Basins and the Caribbean. The islands share similar social, geographical, economic, and environmental characteristics. Con- sidering only island regions, the European Union recognises more than 280 islands, identified as those territories surrounded by the sea, having an area of more than 1 km2, located at least one kilometre from the…
Cruise tourism effetcts in the EU Islands' economies
2007
The theme of ‘the island condition and the characteristics of the EU territories surrounded by the sea has already been treated in a number of studies and in some recent research projects which have highlighted disparities, structural disadvantages and the presence of an economy which relies excessively on tourism. The aim of this paper is to show the incoming tourism or daily visitors’ flows generated by cruises in the EU islands, and to present the tourist expenditure matrix and the composition of the main expenses. The results seem to show that local economies generated by cruise daily visitors if combined with local productions, could have a good level of economic impact.
Motivators That Intervene in the Decision Making Process in Tourism
2014
Being part of the tourism industries involves many researches and analyses in different periods of time, regarding different segments of consumers. Therefore, it is important to be aware of all the factors and motivators that influence a tourist to purchase a particular tourism services. These complex variables are crucial for the final purchase decision of an offer with emotional value for customers. This paper presents the principals motivators which intervene in the decision making process that should be acknowledged by marketers in order to provide the ideal tourism package.
